If you want to build a winning team, understand what brings out the best in each individual.
Many managers lead their staff the way they themselves would like to be managed.
If they value independence, they give everyone space. If they prefer frequent feedback, they check in constantly. If competition motivates them, they assume it motivates everyone.
But your preferences aren’t a blueprint for your team.
One employee thrives with a clear target and room to execute. Another benefits from talking through the approach. Some welcome public recognition. Others value a quiet acknowledgment of their work.
The same management style can energize one person and frustrate another.
Keep expectations consistent. Adapt how you help each person meet them. Start by asking:
- “When do you feel you do your best work?”
- “What support helps you move forward?”
- “How do you prefer to receive feedback?”
- “What makes your work feel rewarding?”
Then pay attention. What builds their confidence? What helps them take ownership? When does your involvement help—and when does it get in the way?
Keep learning as their skills, responsibilities, and circumstances change.
Understanding those differences helps you develop each person’s potential and build a stronger team.
Are you managing your team the way you prefer—or the way each person performs best?
