You solved the problem in 10 minutes. But will your team need you to solve it again tomorrow?
An employee brings you a challenge. You know the answer. You step in, handle it, and get everyone moving. It feels efficient.
But if the same issues keep returning to your desk, consider what your team needs to handle them independently.
Teach instead of taking over. Every task you teach someone to own increases your team’s capacity.
The next time someone asks for help, try this:
- “What have you considered?”
- “What would you recommend, and why?”
- “What information or authority do you need to move forward?”
Explain your reasoning. Clarify where they can make decisions. Let them own the next step.
This takes more time upfront. Over time, it builds confidence, strengthens judgment, and frees you to focus on work that needs your attention.
Independence also requires support: clear expectations, the right tools, and an understanding of when to escalate.
As teams adopt AI and automate routine tasks, managers still have a critical responsibility: helping people develop the judgment to own the outcome.
What’s one decision your team could own today that still comes to you?
